Tschechien SDA 211 CONSERVE THE REMAINS OF CASTLE CIMBURK II 17.08.-07.09.2010 RENO/MANU 15vols
The Cimburk castle is situated in Southern Moravia. It is almost lost in the forest of the Chriby mountains and quite isolated from civilization. The castle was founded in the 14th century and abandoned in 1705. Now you can find only ruins of the castle, which form a significant landmark in the lovely countryside.
LOCATION: 4 km away from Korycany, Southern Moravia
WORK: You will help with the preservation of the castle ruins (you will work with wood, sort stones, brick, clean, plaster...). Additionally you will help with the preparation of cultural events.
LEISURE TIME: In your free time you can make trips to the surrounding countryside, visiting nearby historical towns and monuments (Kromeriz – UNESCO town, monastery Velehrad, castle Buchlov), get to know traditional Moravian music and even do some wine tasting in a wine cellar.
STUDY PART: There will probably be a lecture on conservation of historical monuments.
ACCOMMODATION/FOOD: The accommodation depends on the weather. In case of very cold and rainy weather, the volunteers will sleep in the castle bastion, otherwise in a wooden dormitory above the outdoor kitchen. Please take a warm sleeping bag and a light mattress! You will help with preparing meal for the workcamp. At the camp, there are only dry toilets. Water for washing is taken from a well - a shower is provided only 2 or 3 times a week at the swimming pool in the town of Korycany which is 4 km away.
NOTE: We work even if it’s raining. The accommodation is very basic, please don’t expect to much comfort. The camp is a good choice for people who are fond of the medieval way of a living.
Tschechien SDA 411 BACK TO NATURE 22.08.-10.09.2010 ENVI 12vols
The camp is organized in co-operation with the environmental organization “Nova zeme” (= New Land). It takes place in an abandoned but exceptionally beautiful, hilly area of Cesky les (The Czech Forest), near the western border of the Czech Republic. The campsite is totally isolated from civilization (the nearest Czech village is about 11 km away). The camp may be joined by some Czech volunteers.
LOCATION: Valley “Josefske udoli” in the Czech forest. The nearest town is Tachov.
WORK: You will work in a natural reservation. The work will be manual: mowing meadows, raking grass, cutting brushes, collecting biomass, preparing wood, additionally there will some manual work on the campsite.
LEISURE TIME: Excursions to the forest, nearby villages and small towns. Games and performances at the campsite.
STUDY PART: The volunteers can try different kinds of handicrafts such as ceramics and woodcarving. An original pottery kiln and an Indian sauna are available.
NOTE: The consumption of alcohol and drugs are strictly forbidden! Bring waterproof working shoes and rain-gear. If you have a driving license, bring it with you. The NOVA ZEME association is a Czech partner of a European organization of Eurosolar (www.eurosolar.org).
Tschechien SDA 307 CAMPHILL COMMUNITY II 23.08.-10.09.2010 RENO/AGRI 14vols
The Camphill Community is situated in the center of a small village, 5 km away from a big town. Camphill Ceske Kopisty is the first and so far only Camphill Community in the Czech Republic. Although it´s been running for some 10 years, it´s still at the beginning of its development, therefore the volunteers will have the opportunity to get an insight into a starting project. The community already runs a day center and a resident project for people with special needs. There are 5 residents with special needs and a family living in the community, 5 co-workers spend part of the working week there. There are also 2 therapeutic workshops and an organic vegetable farm, products of which are sold to organic shops.
LOCATION: Ceské Kopisty (near Litoměřice - http://www.litomerice.cz/eng/ and Terezin - http://www.terezin.cz/en/index.asp), 70 km away from Prague
WORK: The volunteers will perform two different kinds of manual work. Firstly they will be helping on the organic farm (mainly in the fields). Secondly they will be helping with cleaning and maintaining the areal of the community and assisting in reconstructing different buildings of the center. Occasionally they may be joined by the residents with special needs, who live and work in the community.
LEISURE TIME: Its possible to take trips to the surrounding towns and go hiking in the nearby hills www.ceskestredohori.cz.
STUDY PART: Lectures about the Camphill movement and the history of Camphill in the Czech Republic. Visit to the nearby Terezin Memorial at the sight of the former concentration camp for Jews – the Terezin Ghetto.
ACCOMMODATION/FOOD: The volunteers will sleep in a big hall on mattresses. One shower in the residential house with hot water will be available. The volunteers will prepare their meals on their own. Bring your local recipes!
NOTE: The consumption of alcohol and usage of drugs are strictly forbidden whithin the community. Smoking is allowed out of the community area. Bring your own sleeping bag, rain-gear, working boots and warm clothes, for the nights can be quite cool.
Tschechien SDA 412 NEW VIRGIN FOREST 12.09.-25.09.2010 ENVI 16vols
The project is organized in cooperation with the local NGO Friends of Nature Society (Spolecnost pratel prirody), whose activities are focused on practical nature protection and on environmental education. The goal of their projects is to restore the natural woods on specific pieces of land and to save some endangered tree species. The workcamp takes place on one of those pieces of land in a mountainous area at the foot of the Jizerske mountains in the north of Bohemia, close to the Polish border.
LOCATION: Liberec, near the Jizerske mountains in the north of Bohemia.
WORK: Planting seedlings of trees and cleaning branches after cutting down trees in the area, so that a new and mixed forest can grow, which closely resembles the natural state of a forest. According to the currant needs this work could be replaced by similar tasks (help with growing the seedlings) in a tree nursery.
LEISURE TIME: You can go hiking in the beautiful surrounding landscape and take trips to Liberec and other nearby towns.
STUDY PART: Ecological discussions
ACCOMMODATION/FOOD: You will sleep in a scout dormitory in Liberec with two bedrooms. There is small kitchen for preparing meals. A bathroom with 2 showers is available.
NOTE: Be prepared to work in all types of weather. Water-proof clothes and boots are necessary. The work will be manual and rather hard. Bring a sleeping bag, good rain gear and a light mat with you!
Tschechien SDA 110 HARVEST SEASON IN KOSTELECKE HORKY 01.10.-18.10.2010 ENVI/AGRI/CONS 14vols
The workcamp will take place in the small village Kostelecke Horky in Eastern Bohemia with about 140 inhabitants. The village is the seat of a branch of the NGO INEX-SDA, which mainly organizes environmental programs for schools and the public in a complex of rural buildings known as “Blue house”. There is a tiny museum on rural lifestyle and a barn for sheep and goats, which European longterm-volunteers are taking care of.
WORK: The work will be mainly manual: The volunteers will prepare the center for the winter and help with maintaining and repairing the center´s buildings. Besides they will perform typical autumn farming tasks such as harvesting, processing fruits and planting trees. On last weekend the international “Day of the trees” is celebrated as a public event with a program. You will help will the preparations of the event.
LEISURE TIME: Trips to nearby historical towns (Litomysl, Rychnov nad Kneznou, Letohrad), hiking in the beautiful Orlicke mountains.
ACCOMMODATION/FOOD: Basic accommodation in the former school of the village. Bathrooms and showers with hot water are available. The volunteers will prepare their own meals. Bring your local recipes!
LOCATION: Kostelecke Horky (next train stop: Chocen or Plchuvky)
NOTE: Bring your own sleeping bag, working boots and warm clothes, for the nights can be quite cool.
