PROJECT: Huerto de la Cora is an association to promote the implementation of Agroecology. Probably you are asking yourself what exactly Agroecology stands for? We can say it is a science for the development of agriculture in harmony with the ecosistems and the social and culture heritage. It is a kind of mixture of agrology, environment and antropology but we must state that to develope it in the scientific method is the only tool used, and it is the consecuence of reasearches and investigations done by professors at universities. The opposite to Huerto de la Cora is Monsantos policy with modified genetic seeds. These seeds represent the inadecuate way to develope agriculture not taking into consideration the environment, culture and food sovereignty. Basicly Huerto de la Cora tries to recover the local seeds for vegetables, which represent an inmense world heritage created during centuries and centuries of the humankind, investigates the plants produced and distributes the seeds in a free open way among people interested in self gardening and food sovereign.
They use the method of the arabic gardens in the islamic Spain of the century VII to XIV when theis culture managed to introduce so many vegetables in Europe coming from Asia (all sorts of garlic, onions, leaks, paprika, lettuce, carrot etc. Just think that the only original vegetable of Europe is cabbage. The rest is imported ). This arabic garden is called Garden of La Cora or Huerto de la Cora. Huerto de la Cora is conected to the University Pablo Olavide of Sevillla.

AGE: 18-26
PROJECT: This is one of the oldest settlements in La Rioja, located on the right bank of the river Alhama, close to Inestrillas and Aguilar del Río Alhama, between two small hills. The oldest remains correspond to a burial site dating back to the end of the second millennium before Christ. In the cave of los Lagos (the lakes) some human remains and pottery fragments from the end of the Bronze Age were discovered.
The Peledons settled at Contrebia Leucade during the Iron Age. There, they constructed a fortress, taking advantage of a rocky escarpment over the river, urbanised the land and excavated houses in the rock, with a rectangular floor plan.
Towards the second half of the 4th century before Christ, other Celtiberian tribes arrived. These tribes extended the settlement and reinforced the defensive systems by excavating a deep moat out of the rock and constructing ramparts around the town. Work was also carried out to supply the settlement with drinking water. Then the Romans arrived and conquered the town in the year 142 BC, leading to the Romanisation of the lands of the Alhama river basin.
At present, the archaeological site is one of the most spectacular ones in the Peninsular and is the most significant one for learning about the extent of the Celtiberian technical development and organisational capacity. It also seeks to understand the uniqueness of the archaeological site and the motivations that led their people at different stages in which the city was occupied.
WORK: Cleaning and preparation of the terrain and structures of archaeological site Contrebia Leucade. Work camp in the archaeological site will be developed, four hours from Monday to Friday, in the morning from 8,00 to 12,00, to avoid the hotter hours at the cost of getting up early. This schedule allows to leave a small space of time before eating to rest, go to the pool ...Affect the entire archaeological site and will consist of the removal of vegetation (grasses, bushes and shrubs) were born in the spaces excavated to date, preventing rating in perspective the different elements discovered. Also proceed to the elimination or relocation, when possible, of the loose stones of the walls or washed hillside. Features and dimensions of spaces and structures formed by compacted earth floors, drywall locked with earth or limestone soils where the roots have penetrated causing breakage and chipping, require extreme care in removing plants and shrubs in any event must be
supervised continuously and directly by qualified personnel.

PROJECT: Mancomunidad de Sakana (group of municipalities of Sakana, Navarra).
In this area there is an ancient roman road which was used for trade and transport throughout many years (B.C to XVIII century). One goal of this project is to restore the road and try to discover more of it. It is located in between mountains and trees, so the working area will be mainly in the shade. Still there is much to be discover and it seems that this place was actually part of the old path of Camino de Santiago from Bourdeux to Leon and Santiago, in the area of Aditu. There is another project taking place: in a coastal town, not far from this valley. It is about to build a ship like they were in the XVI century. Those boats were used by basques for expeditions to Terranova (eastern coasts of Canada) to hunt whales. The ship is being built the same way they did in XVI century, and wood from our valley is being used for this purpose. The link to the project: http://www.albaola.com/en
WORK: The work is basically to restore an old path, but also to restore traditions. Social life would be also very important, so be prepared to meet some youngsters of the area and try to encourage them to participate in the work you are doing. The project is meant to learn the Basque/Navarrean culture and history as well.
ACCOMODATION AND FOOD: It will be itinerant. Volunteers will live in different houses donated by each of the City Councils involved. Volunteers will do shopping and cook for themselves.
LOCATION AND LEISURE: workcamp is situated in the province of Navarra, in the north of Spain. It takes place in a valley between the cities of Pamplona (50 km), Vitoria (50 km) and San Sebastian (70 km). Bilbao is more or less 100 km away. Volunteers will be able to enjoy green and mountainous landscape and good weather: hot in summer, but not too much. If you like to do a beach trip, San Sebastian is a beautiful city with great beaches. Bilbao also offers a lot for those who want to visit a bigger city.
REQUIREMENTS: We expect highly motivated volunteers. The workcamp will require a lot of work. Motivation letter with a guarantee to work 6 hours at reasonable pace is required. Interested in Basque culture. Able to ride a bicycle. You should bring your own insurance. Age 18-30 is preferable. This workcamp has been selected as a European Heritage Volunteering Project. Therefore volunteers are asked to be specially motivated with Patrimonial Heritage and able to take work very seriously.
