Russland SFER-15 Kirov region 08.08.-21.08.2010 ENVI 6vols
Kirov, formerly known as Vyatka and Khlynov, is a city in northeast European Russia, on the Viatka river, the administrative center of Kirov Oblast. The fort of Khlynov, situated just west of the Ural Mountains, was founded by Novgorodian entrepreneurs in 1181. It was first mentioned as a town in documents from 1374. In 1781 Catherine the Great renamed Khlynov to Vyatka and made it a centre of separate Guberniya. By the end of the 19th century, it was an important station on the Trans-Siberian railway. In December 1934, it was renamed after the Soviet leader Sergey Kirov, who had been assassinated on the first of December. It is a big industrial Russian city. Kirov is famous abroad for its traditional handicrafts such as the “Dymkovskaya” toy.
LOCATION: Kirov, Russia
WORK: the main task of the work includes the rearrangement of the park in the Sosheni settlement. The volunteers are expected to plant the bushes, to weed, to clean the garbage and to paint the summerhouses and fences.
STUDY: Volunteers will get acquainted with Russian protected nature places and will learn how to look after them.
LEISURE TIME: Visiting historical places of Kirov and the most interesting museums of the city, picnics, playing sport games, making parties and other entertaining activities concerning intercultural learning.
ACCOMMODATION: the volunteers will live in the dormitory of the Kirov timber industry college (four persons per room) shower and kitchen are available. The volunteers will cook breakfast and dinner by themselves, lunch will be provided in the canteen. In the weekends the volunteers will cook by themselves.
TERMINAL: it is planned to meet the volunteers at Moscow train station but if it that will be impossible, the volunteers will be met at Kirov train station.
SPECIAL REMARKS: Camp language is English, but basics in Russian are welcome! Russian students will join the project as well! Please bring national music instruments, games, a good mood and your ideas for having nice time together. The age limit is 18-30.
Russland SFER-16 Vishenki settlement 09.08.-22.08.2010 KIDS/SOCI/DISA 12vols
Smolensk is one of the most ancient Russian towns. The first mention about this town was in 863. Then it was a very big city with many inhabitants and it had a great influence on Russian politics. Nowadays it is a town with 350,000 inhabitants. It is located at the bank of the Dnepr River about 370 km from Moscow. The city has a lot of historical, architectural and cultural sights. The most interesting sight is of course Smolensk Kremlin that was built in the 16th century. On the Kremlin walls you can visit some museums, including the Thunder museum and the Museum of Russian vodka. Also Smolensk is one of the towns where you can see some very old churches of the 11th- 12th centuries. The camp is organized by Smolensk regional public youth organization “Rassvet-C” on the base of a rehabilitation center for children and youth “Cherry”. It was opened in 1981 as a children’s health-improving camp. Since 2006 it became a rehabilitation centre for children. Every year the center hosts about 3000 children with their parents, partly from socially disadvantaged families and orphanages. The other children are suffering from disordered motor functions; their parents accompany them. The center is located in a very picturesque place not far from the Kerzhenskyi reserved area on the river shore. There is an oak-wood and birch grove around the center.
LOCATION: Smolensk region, Vishenki settlement 5A building. The distance: 370 km from Moscow.
WORK: The volunteers are expected to help to organize the entertaining activities and sport games for the children. Also the volunteers will help tutors in the activities orientated to the social rehabilitation of disabled children. As well as to support the repairing of the Center (clean the rubbish at the territory of the Center, paint some benches, fences, walls etc). The volunteers are expected to work 5 days a week, 5 hours per day.
LEISURE TIME: having picnics in the forest, making a tour of the Smolensk town. The volunteers will be able to visit Smolensk Kremlin and the most interesting museums, including a Second World War museum and a Diamond processing factory. Also a trip to a national park “Smolensk lakeside” is planned.

SPECIAL REMARKS: Camp language is English, but basics in Russian are welcome! Every volunteer should have a medical certificate about his health condition which is necessary for working with children.
Russland W4U-13 VALAAM ISLAND 15.08.-05.09.2010 AGRI/CONS 10vols
Project takes place at the fantastic island of Valaam - one of the most picturesque places and beautiful monasteries in the Northwest of Russia. It is sometimes called "Mount Athos of the North". Valaam, surrounded by the archipelago of more than 50 beautiful small islands, is situated in Lake Ladoga.
During its centuries-old history, the Monastery has suffered from devastation and desolation several times. But, by God's mercy, every time it revived. Last time it recovered in atheistic Soviet Union on December 14, 1989, when a ship with six monks moored in the harbor. Since that day, the new history of Valaam began. A lot of monks live here today, some of them renovate old churches, other work in the fields. People come to help them to save cultural heritage, and due to them a lot of churches of Valaam are already renovated. A lot of pilgrims come every summer to visit Holy Earth and to help in renovation works.
LOCATION: 8-10 hours by night train to St.Petersburg, then there is a transfer to island is approximately in 220 km distance.
WORK: International volunteers will be integrated to 20-30 russian volunteers, and all together will work, eat and live. We will help monks in harvesting and cleaning the fields, grass cutting, preparing firewood and work in the garden.
LEISURE TIME: During the free time you will have a chance to enjoy nature, swim in the lake, visit different churches and temples situated in Valaam and learn about Russian orthodox culture. You can see photos of Valaam at www.valaam.ru

ACCOMMODATION: In the dormitory (4-20 persons per room). Monastery provides beds with blankets, pillows etc. You should take working boots, gloves and clothes with you, raincoat and long skirts & kerchief for girls. The monastery provides ordinary (with meat) or vegetarian food. There’re only cold water in the dormitory, shower is available twice a week.
SPECIAL REMARKS: Volunteers should be patient to orthodox religion. We can only invite volunteers with the good health conditions, because monastery is quite isolated and it is hard to get to hospital in case so.
Russland W4U-15 St. Petersburg 01.09.-21.09.2010 FEST 10vols
St Petersburg used to be the capital of Russian Empire and nowadays it is still considered the cultural capital of the state due to the great amount of historical monuments, architectural styles and masterpieces of arts which preserved here and a high concentration of places to find modern art culture in its bloom. The Art center “Triangle” is a huge art-space, taking its place in the building of former factory. This year it holds an international industrial theatres festival and needs help of volunteers.
LOCATION: 8-10 hours by night train from Moscow
WORK: Volunteers will be integrated into the group of 20 russian volunteers – organizers. Volunteers will maintain a lot of construction tasks: organise and decorate dressing rooms, assemble scenery and setting up illuminating lights. During the festival time they will be distributing tickets, and take responsibility for meeting guests and cleaning the area. You should be flexible and ready for long working day during this project.
LEISURE TIME: Volunteers may participate in plays, communicate a lot with art professions and visit modern art museums. You will as well go sightseeing the world famous places of interest of St. Petersburg among them Isaakievskiy cathedral, the state Hermitage museum and Petropavlovskaya fortress.
LANGUAGE: Camp language is English, but basics in Russian are welcome!
ACCOMMODATION: All volunteers Russian and international will live in the building of former kinder-garden (there possibly will be people with kids and a dog). Comfort conditions are limited, common shower, please, bring your sleeping bag with you. The group will be responsible for cooking and shopping.
Russland W4U-16 Vorkuta 04.09.-14.09.2010 KIDS/DISA 10vols
The work camp will be organized in cooperation with Komi Republic’s State Institution “Social rehabilitation centre for under-aged children with less opportunities (or disabilities)”.
LOCATION: Vorkuta is town that situated on the north of Komi Republic in 140 km near the Artic Ocean beyond the Arctic Circle. There are about 100 thousand inhabitants in Vorkuta. We haven’t road to Vorkuta because of climate’s conditions. You can get there only by railway: two days from Moscow or one day from Syktyvkar.
The distance from Moscow is 2 days by train.
WORK: Our town isn’t adapted for needs of disabled people. There aren’t elevators ramps, lifts in Vorkuta. The volunteers will work as personal assistants for children who can’t move without assistance (blind, children in wheelchairs, kids with cerebral palsy). They will help children to take part in cultural, sport and entertaining activities. Also the volunteers will help tutors in the events organized to help disabled children in social rehabilitation. Making friendship with teenagers with physical disabilities and realization creative workshops (dancing, singing, drawing…) Working time is about 4 hours per day.
LEISURE TIME: during the free time camp leaders will organize excursions in the surrounding areas, meetings with active local youth, barbecue in the holiday center “Yuzhnyi”, russian traditional sauna – “banya”, meeting with locals – nenets, their traditions, late at night it’ll be possible to spend time in town and have fun with locals.
ACCOMMODATION: Volunteers will be hosted in rehabilitation centre. Please, bring your sleeping bag. They will prepare the food by themselves.
SPECIAL REMARKS: motivation letter required. People with experience in animation, musicians, artists etc. are highly welcome to apply.
Russland W4U-14 Petrozavodsk 06.09.-17.09.2010 SOCI/ART/CULT 10vols
Petrozavods like St. Petersburg was found by the Piter The Great. “Mix of cultures” is an annual project that has been held since 2007. Volunteers from different countries come to organize intercultural activities for children and youth of Petrozavodsk to acquaint them with various cultures and traditions. This is a big event for all the young people of the town.
LOCATION: The distance from Moscow is 14-16 hours by train.
WORK: International and Russian volunteers will spend 6 hours a day taking part in intercultural activities, so every participant has to be ready for non-fixed schedule. We will prepare presentations about different countries, traditions, cultures, as well as prepare workshops of various language-courses and other activities with the help of Russian volunteers and employees of centre “Initiative”. A “Photo marathon” will be held– foreign and Russian volunteers will prepare photos for social photo exhibition. Foreign volunteers will also be invited to take part in a program on the radio where they will be able to talk about the project.
LANGUAGE: Camplanguage is English, but basics in Russian are welcome!
LEISURE TIME: In order to let international volunteers get acquainted with Karelian culture and traditions, excursions to Karelian local history museum and Fine arts museum will be organized. We can also organize sport activities and games. On the weekends there is a possibility to go for a picnic out of town. Volunteers may also visit famous island Kizi.
ACCOMMODATION: Volunteers will be accommodated in host families. Breakfast will be provided by the family, lunch will be organized in a school canteen and dinner in a cafe.
