Peru PS07 Urpi IV (Ayacucho) 08.09.-28.09.2010 KIDS/SOCI 10vols
PROJECT: The project is run for the national goals of improving the lives of Peruvian children, teen-agers, men and women and works in both rural areas and urban communities. The organization (INABIF, a government-run organization) designs strategies and actions to reduce the indexes of exclusion and to help to solve family problems such as domestic violence against children and the lack of education. It is a program that works in many levels from theoretical planning to practical activities. One of the places where this program works is the orphanage URPI at the City of Ayacucho, Peru.
Vive Mexico, through its local group in Peru (Peru SonQoykipi) and the organization INABIF has been working with this program for four years with excellent results. With this in mind, a group of international volunteers is again invited to participate in activities with children and Peruvian families.
WORK: Volunteers will have the opportunities to work intensively with the children of Hogar URPI for six hours a day, Monday to Saturday. While at URPI, volunteers will be working in a supporting role with the teachers and other permanent volunteers at the orphanage. While the volunteers are responsible for both caring for and disciplining the children, the teachers and other permanent volunteers will help with more serious disciplinary actions that are required. Additionally, there are opportunities to design activities, attend workshops, and play games with the children. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT ALL VOLUNTEERS BE PREPARED TO WORK WITH CHILDREN! VOLUNTEERS MUST BE EXTREMELY MOTIVATED FOR THE TWO AND A HALF WEEKS THEY ARE IN PERU, AND KEEP IN MIND THAT THE CHILDREN ARE THE FIRST AND MOST IMPORTANT REASON VOLUNTEERS ARE ASKED TO WORK AT URPI!
ACCOMODATION: There is a house in which the volunteers will live about five minutes’ by walking from Hogar URPI and about 20 minutes from the city center. Buses, mototaxis, and taxis are readily available for cheap transportation around the city. The house is simple but consists of all basic neccesities. There are three sleeping rooms, with capacities varying from three to six people each, with simple metal frame cots. These beds can feel quite thin at times, and extra padding (air mattress or camping pad) can make the stay more comfortable, and there are no blankets, so a sleeping bag is a neccesity. There is a courtyard to do laundry (by hand only) with plenty of space to hang clothes. The dining room serves as a dual purpose room and consists of a large table with stools, a couch, and two relaxing chairs to use. Additionally, there is space on the roof for relaxing or drying clothes. Finally, in the house are some materials to use with the children. This supply is not extensive, and again, any contribution a volunteer wishes to make would be well appreciated.
LANGUAGE: The official language of the workcamp is English. If possible, however, a working knowledge of Spanish is appreciated.
EXTRA FEE: 210 EURO OR ITS EQUIVALENT IN NUEVOS SOLES OR US DOLLARS.
This fee covers the expenses of the camp, board and lodging and SOME leisure activities, the administration costs that are needed to organize and run a workcamp, and some money for a direct donation to URPI to improve the lives of the children. Please pay to the campleader in cash as traveller checks cannot be accepted.
CLOSEST AIRPORT: Aeropuerto Coronel FAP Alfredo Mendivil Duarte.
SPECIAL REMARKS: Transportation: transportation in the city is not provided, but for group excursions outside of the city a bus or minivan will be provided.
Peru PS08 Fatima IV (Puira) 29.09.-19.10.2010 SOCI 10vols
PROJECT: The aim of this project is orientated to renovating and reconstructing some areas of an elementary school that need to be improved. Volunteers could contribute to enhance the building through different tasks such as:

• restoring the school’s library;
• restoring the play-ground;
• restoring some green areas.
They could contribute also to the children’s education through giving some dances’ lessons.
WORK: Volunteers will help with all these activities to renovate and maintain the school. All the tasks will be supported by the children’s parents and the local families. They are also asked to give some dances’ lessons in order to show the national dances of their countries, but they will be free of teaching some other dances.
ACCOMODATION: Volunteers will be lodged in a private house.
