Litauen    CYVA 06    KURTUVENAI REGIONAL PARK     23.07.-04.08.2012    ENVI   8vols (no more female)
For volunteers 18-30 years old.
PROJECT: A huge variety of landscapes from forests over wetlands to large fields. This could describe Kurtuvenai Regional Park in just a few words. But with a deeper look, it’s a protected area around a former manor full of history and legends. To protect the stadium of the nature, we issued this voluntary camp. The idea of this project is to rebuild the park as it was in times of the manor house. The park is one of the oldest of Lithuania. It was first mentioned in 1498. Today the regional park direction cares about the old manor. In 2002 the park won the ESS Phare (European social survey) which supports a clean-up project for it. After this project the “face of the park” has changed elementary. A concrete street was replaced by a semi-circle way linking the church and the granary. The place where the manor stood was marked with a fence.
The aim of the project is to create preconditions for the retaining of former Kurtuvenai manor and for its application for the needs of visitors. For example, during the Renaissance vegetation in special shapes were cultivated. Later on foreign plants became fashionable. Afterwards and until today the park tries to give a picture of what it has been at the end of the 19th century by replanting local varieties of trees and plants like oaks, black cherry, jasmine and hazelnuts. This project will encourage the development of the parks free time areas, the application of fishery ponds for recreational goals, and the appearance of new services of horse tourism, catering, accommodation as well as other recreational services.

Renovierungs- und Umweltprojekt am Dubysa Fluss
Litauen    CYVA 09    DUBYSOS REGIONAL PARK     06.08.-18.08.2012    ENVI/RENO   8vols (no more female)
For volunteers 18-30 years old.
PROJECT: Dubysa Regional Park was set up with the aim of preserving the landscape and natural ecosystem of the eroded valley of the river Dubysa, which is one of the most scenic in Lithuania. The river’s loops and old beds, forest-covered slopes, floodplains, abounding and rapid tributaries flowing in deep valleys make up a unique ecosystem rich in plant and animal species. Salmon and brown trout come here to spawn.
The management of the regional park, protection of nature and cultural heritage is done in close cooperation with the local village communities. They play an important role in protecting the old traditions, local nature and cultural values. The directorate of the park is interested in the well being of the local communities and therefore puts every effort into this.
“Lyduvenai” is a young community uniting people from Lyduvenai and the nearby villages. The office of the community is located in the former secondary school of Lyduvenai. The school itself, due to constant decrease in population, has been closed in 2007. The community has several spaces in need of renovation (painting etc.). Volunteers will have all the necessary provisions for the job (tools, materials, work clothes).
The village of Lyduvenai is near a very popular water tourism route on the river Dubysa. Unfortunately, not all the tourists are conscious and friendly towards nature. Often river banks are littered with trash. During the workcamp volunteers will help the parks staff to clean the banks of Dubysa River and Lyduvenai village area.
ACCOMODATION: Volunteers will live in the school used by the village community. Mattresses will be provided, but participants should bring sleeping bags. Currently the village has a population of 120. Lyduvenai is famous for the longest bridge in Lithuania. With the length of 599m and height of 42m the bridge is part of Lithuanian cultural heritage.
