Außerdem erhebt Citizens in Action (C.i.A.) eine kleine Extra-Gebühren vor Ort 20 €.

Griechenland    CiA01    Oreino Crete    01.07.-17.07.2017    ENVI   10vols
PROJECT: The project partner is the Municipality of Ierapetra – Department of Environment & Culrural Association of Oreino village. Our local partners believe that the international volunteers are an incentive to the whole local community to get involved in the solution of local problems. The last two years, because of the International workcamps, a very vast network of local people has been mobilised and have been involved in all phases of the camp life. This involvement had a positive impact not only in terms of work but also in the community cohesion and initiated an interesting dynamic.
WORK: Volunteers will be involved in forestry work. In cooperation with local environmental groups and villagers, volunteers will continue the work of last years’ workcamps, connecting Apigania forest and the Gorge of Koutsouras, to the village of Oreino, thus providing a hiking route that connects the mountainous village all the way to the sea while at the same time providing a fire protection zone in an area that had its natural balanced disrupted by a great fire in 1993.
More specifically volunteers will:
a) Clean the route from old trees and other materials, as a fire protection measure.
b) Create and place sign posts and information panels along the path.
c) Create wooden fences in exposed parts of the path and wooden steps where needed.
d) Help in the organisation and of course participate in the Oreino village traditional party.
Volunteers will work 5 hours per day, 6 days per week. We might need to adapt the daily schedule (e.g. start working at 6 in the morning or work both morning and afternoon) in order to avoid the hottest hours of the day. Any changes in the working schedule and/or type of work will be discussed and decided as a group and in close cooperation with the local host.
ACCOMMODATION: Volunteers will be hosted in a small guest house in the village of Oreino. Volunteers are expected to sleep on bunk beds provided by the local host. Shower and warm water as well as all basic facilities are provided. Volunteers will be given all necessary equipment and materials from the local host and they will prepare their meals in shifts. We cook using local products and donated raw or cooked supplies and we adapt our menu to the supplies we have.
LOCATION: Oreino village on Thripti mountain is surrounded by walnut, pine and plane trees. In the area there are also many fresh water springs. Oreino is at the top end of the Canyon while the Koutsouras forest and entrance of the Gorge is 4 hours walk south. Oreino, is a very small mountainous village with very friendly and hospitable community. Even though Creta is an island, the workcamp is located in an altitude of 683 m. Thus visits to the sea will be limited according to the transportation capacities of the local partners.
Visits and environmental education excursions to the most important sites of the area can be organised as well as excursion to the island of Chrysi, one of the most important environmental protected areas of Greece. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to visit and participate in some of the cultural events organised in different parts of the area. Camp-leaders will organise free time activities in co-operation with the volunteers and the local partner. Please note the host organization does not cover free time activities expenses!
NEXT TERMINAL: Heraklion (HER) or Sitia (JSH) airports. Heraklion port (If coming from Piraeus or other island by ferry). Ierapetra Bus Station.
REMARKS: The work will be physically demanding mainly because of the weather conditions (sun, high temperatures and wind). The recommended travel option is to arrive in Heraklion before 12:00 on the 1st of July and depart from Heraklion after 12:00 on the 17th of July. Please try to arrange your travel according to the above mentioned dates as we will be not able to help you reach the camp side otherwise.
