Kakamega
Rainforest |
Anmeldecode: PI-KEN-03 |
|
The
Kakamega rainforest is the only remaining rain forest in Kenya
and is the eastern most remnant of the Guineo-Congolian forest.
Due to its isolation from similar forest type, it is the home to
many unique and rare animal and plant species. Because of high
human population, this has exerted negative pressures on the
forest like illegal logging, charcoal burning, cattle grazing,
harvest of medicinal plants and general clearing of the forest
for agriculture.
Kakamega Environmental Educational Program (KEEP) was thus
established to educate the residents around the forest about its
fragile ecosystem and to involve them in its co-existence and
preservation, ensuring the forest is cherished as a healthy,
unique and diverse ecosystem for and by future generations.
Farming is the mainstay of the local economy and is widely
practiced through livestock, poultry rearing, small scale
farming of maize, beans, coffee, sweet potatoes, bananas, pawpaw
and vegetables. Also tourism within the forest generates a
substantial income to the local economy.
