UNA S05 MTV Sir Gar 25th July to 19th November 2010
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: he successful applicant will join a team of between 3 and 5 Medium Term Volunteers (MTVs). This group of MTVs will support and manage International Volunteer Projects in rural Carmarthenshire between July and November. Each International Volunteer Project (IVP) will involve a group of around 9 volunteers from different countries who will work together on a project over a period of two weeks. The MTV group will be responsible for leading these projects. In 2010 there will be 6 of these projects.
The main focus of the project will be environmental work, done in co-ordination with rangers at Carmarthenshire Countryside Service. The work is varied but its aim is to maintain and improve access to the countryside. Work could include footpath maintenance, putting up stiles and fences, general maintenance work or more specific project work. For example, groups have recently been building an eco garden for a local school and constructing boardwalks and footpaths for a local nature trail. The work will take place in varying locations around Carmarthenshire. This is the work that will be done from 9 - 5 on Monday to Friday and will form the largest part of the project. The work can be hard and quite physically demanding. It will also be done in all types of weather! Volunteers should come prepared for this.
There may also be the opportunity for volunteers to deliver global education workshops and community events in local schools and/or with local youth groups. The MTV team will also be responsible (with the help of UNA Exchange) for the planning of community events. These can be shaped by the MTV team but will be global in theme. At the end of the projects the MTV team will have the chance to work together with staff from UNA Exchange and local youth workers to put together a global community event.
The team will also be responsible for motivating the international volunteers during the environmental work and participating alongside them, co-ordinating the free time programme, driving the group between the work site and accommodation (in vehicles provided by the project), keeping a record of the budget, organising domestic life and the group accommodation (e.g. organising rotas and shopping) and other practical tasks as they arise. MTVs should be prepared to share the domestic every day tasks fairly amongst the group and be happy to join in tasks such as cooking, washing up, cleaning the accommodation etc.
This would be perfect for people wanting to gain leadership, environmental and community development experience. Although this is not a paid position it is designed so that you shouldn't have to use any of your personal finances for the duration of the project.
ACCOMMODATION & LOCAL AEREA:
Volunteers will be living in the Glanaman Youth Resource Centre in the small town of Glanaman in Carmarthenshire, Wales. The accommodation will be in dormitories in the Youth Centre and the Centre also has its own kitchen, toilets and showers. There is also a pool table, a DVD player, some books and some board games that volunteers can use in their free time.
The town of Glanaman is quite small but there are shops and pubs close by. There is also a post office in the town. The town of Ammanford is a few minutes away by bus and has more shops, a bank and a big supermarket.
Carmarthenshire is a largely rural area and the group will have the opportunity to explore beautiful countryside and beaches in their free time. Popular activities include visiting nearby beaches and castles and the National Botanic Garden of Wales.
