| IWO-B1 SANAN GYEONGGI 12.09 - 05.12.2012 AGRI&SOCI 3 volunteers Historically, and even now, human beings have been searching for the true definition of a peaceful, harmonious, and "happy life". In pursuit of the answer to this question, a group of people gathered in 1984 in what is now Sanan Village, an idealistic community which follows the philosophy of an environment-friendly, non-possessive society. As of today, around 20 families reside within this communal village, and the residents are encouraged to pay more attention to the preservation and conservation of the environment while also freely sharing public resources. Those who are interested in a new, prospective way of living-one which is very different from a "normal and capitalized" life-may obtain some fresh ideas about their life through this program. WORK: Volunteers will assist the villagers with organic farming, taking care of chickens, and household work, such as cooking for villagers and cleaning in the village kitchen. And various festivals are taking place often, you may have chance to meet many people through those events. Through the project, volunteers will be able to, partake in not only in the eating of healthy, organic food from nature but also experience growing the food under the caring supervision of kind, warm-hearted locals. Extra activities: You may have chance to learn Korean and Japanese too as you possibly meet a few Japanese residents. There will be further culture exchange through sports, cooking, and various activities. Also, Sanan is fairly close to Seoul. | IWO-B4 SANMAEUL INCHEON 12.09 - 05.12 YOUTH & AGRI This is the project with "Sanmaeul High School". The school is running by unique education system as an alternative high school. The school focused on eco-farming education, students' independency, peace as well as foreign languages. In this sense, the school is trying to bring intercultural learning into the school so that students will get a chance to experience diverse cultures. WORK: Volunteers will mainly join eco-farming at school with some of staffs at school. Occasionally, volunteers will join manual work, too. Once a week, volunteers will lead an after school class upon volunteers' talent or skill such as foreign languages, dance, music and so on. While volunteers join various school activities, they could bring intercultural condition and diverse culture into the school. Extra activities: Ganghwa Island is very beautiful and there are many places to go; mountains and beach. For 3 months, you don't need to worry about what you are going to do. | IWO-A5 SAMCHEOK GANGWON 19.06 - 27.08.2012 KIDS & EDU 3 volunteers IWO-B5 SAMCHEOK GANGWON 12.09 - 05.12.2012 KIDS & EDU 3 volunteers SamCheok is a city of tourism, with a beautiful beach and cave. But the standard of living is not developed nearly as well and the education facilities are not enough for the local community. The host organization is a local church which runs a Local Children Center that provides educational and cultural opportunities for children who has fewer opportunities. With the help of LOVE volunteers, they have been experienced global awareness and interests. There is a musical team and they are performing modern and traditional Korean music for local people. WORK: Teaming up with a LOVE Korean volunteer, they will organize and manage cultural and educational afterschool programs such as English language classes and various outdoor activities. The students in the Local Children Center (host organization) are mainly elementary school students - with a few middle school students - and normally stay at the center from 2PM and until around 9PM. Any activities and ideas are welcomed by the host organization as long as they provide the local children with opportunities of cultural exchange. The local children are very open to new programs and are very interested in learning different countries. Extra activities: There are many beautiful beaches, mountains and sightseeing places around during free days. There is also a big fish market which is quite famous in this area. | IWO -A6 YEONGDEOK GYEONGBUK 19.06 - 27.08.2012 KIDS & EDU 3 volunteers IWO -B6 YEONGDEOK GYEONGBUK 12.09 - 05.12.2012 KIDS & EDU 3 volunteers Yeongdoek is a small town which is famous for beautiful scenery of East Sea and delicious sea foods such as snow crap, anchovy etc. Many tourists visit and enjoy their time in Yeongdeok, especially in summer time. Although it's good place to live, since there are not enough job position, parents work near city and came back late in the night. Due to the reason, children are not fully cared by their parents during the day time. The Local Children Center operates by local church. The center provides children a shelter so that children could protect them until their parents come. Thanks to international volunteers, children will open up a door to a new experience for the local children and youths. WORK: Teaming up with a LOVE Korean volunteer, they will organize and manage cultural and educational afterschool programs for English language. Volunteers are encouraged to organize their own English class for the children. The children at the centers are mainly elementary school students with few middle school students. Students normally stay at the center after their school from 2 PM until around 8PM. Any kind of activities and ideas are welcomed by the host organization as long as they provide the local children the opportunities of cultural exchange. The local children are very open and interested about different countries in the world. Extra activities: If you can't decide whether you go between mountain and sea, Yeongdoek is perfect place for you. Wherever you go, you can experience the real nature. Since the government usually develops infrastructure depending on the population of the region, many people in this area are isolated from those benefits. The host organization is a local church which runs a Local Children Center. The center provides educational and cultural opportunities to local children and youth. The center has many children who are growing up in families with one parent, or grandparents. Most of them have fewer opportunities meeting foreigners, so with the help of international volunteers, the local children of Uiryeong can experience global awareness while volunteers can feel the warmth and kindness of this rural Korean community. WORK: Teaming up with a LOVE Korean volunteer, international volunteers will organize and manage cultural and educational afterschool programs such as foreign language classes (mainly English) for different ages of children. The children who use the center are mainly elementary school students-with few middle school students-and normally stay at the center from 2PM and until around 9PM. Any activities and ideas are welcomed by the host organization as long as they provide the local children with opportunities of cultural exchange. The local children are very open to new programs and are very interested in learning about different countries. Extra activities: There is a sports complex nearby. | IWO -A8 WANDO JEONNAM 19.06 - 27.08.2012 KIDS&EDU IWO- B8 WANDO JEONNAM 12.09 - 05.12.2012 KIDS&EDU PROJECT: Wando is an island located about 500km southwest of Seoul. Connected to the mainland by a bridge, Wando is famous with beautiful sea, clean air, and abundant seafood, which is of the highest quality in the region. However the local youth do not get many opportunities to be involved with international people. In this respect, this project will play an important role in bringing a taste of international culture to the local children and people. WORK: The host organization is a local church which runs a local children’s center(LCC), an English Language Institution, and various social service centers such as a senior center and a welfare center. International and a Korean volunteer will join English Language institution and LCC as English language instructors. During the program, there will be a few English camps which will take place in the Language Institution, so any ideas that volunteers come up with for activities will be much appreciated. *English Language Institution: This is non-profit institution for needy children in Wando. The main English teacher is from the Philippines and it is under his/her instruction that volunteers will lead vocabulary, conversation, and writing classes through formal methods of instruction. *Local Children Center: This is non-profit care center for children in Wando. Volunteer may have classes such art, music, English, cultures, dance etc. The class will be designed by volunteers’ idea only so that if you have any talent or hobby to teach item it will be very nice. Extra activities: During the weekends, feel free to visit the surrounding JeonNam area, participate in various local festivals, experience Korean mountain climbing, and visit nearby historical sites. | IWO-B9 JEONGEUP 12.09 - 05.12.2012 KIDS & EDU 2 volunteers Jeongeup, connected to Mt. Naejang National Park and Mt. Ibam, is an especially stunning city to tour during the spring and autumn seasons. But as the government usually develops infrastructure depending on the population of the region, many people in this area are isolated from these benefits. The host organization, a local church which runs a youth center, provides educational and cultural opportunities to local youth who otherwise have a fewer opportunities of experiencing these activities. The purpose of this program is to bring global awareness to the local youth so that they can better understand our quickly diversifying world. WORK: The project site is a Youth Center which will be officially open in January of 2012. With the help of IWO's LOVE Project, the Youth Center is aiming to develop English language for the local children and youth. Volunteers will plan and organize their own English conversation class for different age of children and youth. Volunteers will also help other local children center in the same city a week. Jangheung is about 350km away from Seoul. The Local Children Center and kindergarten are running by Jangheung-Eup Church which is established in 1910, the center focuses its resources on children who have fewer opportunities to learn foreign languages and experience different cultures due to their family situations. Your participation in this project will create new experiences and opportunities for the local children and youth. WORK: Teaming up with a LOVE Korean volunteer, volunteers will organize and manage cultural and educational afterschool programs such as foreign language classes (mainly English). You may run English camp once during your project. The children who use the center are mainly elementary school students - with a few middle school students - and normally stay at the center from 4PM and until around 9PM. Any activities and ideas volunteers create are welcomed by the host organization as long as they provide the local children with opportunities of cultural exchange. The local children are very open to new programs and are very interested in learning about different countries. Extra activities: There are many mountains and small islands around Jangheung. Especially in Mt. Eokbul, you can experience wood culture in Cypress forest at woodland. You can find ecological park at Tamjin liver. If you are nature lover, this is the place you to join. !!
